Slideshow of Beached False Killer Whales on Kommetjie Beach... it was a sad, sad day indeed.

55 False killer whales beached themselves on Kommetjie Beach 30 May 2009. There were no survivors. Everyone tried for hours and hours in the icey waters to rescue them, but they just kept rebeaching themselves.

A tragedy.

Of all my tales
My saddest one is of the whales
My tears are falling as I write
It truly was the saddest sight
There really isn't much to say
Except I'll not forget this day
55 whales beached right here
I feel bereft, I feel despair
That these beautiful creatures of the deep
Would take their lives just makes me weep
Why? I beg, what went wrong?
This is my cry, my whalesong!
